Creating safer environments
starts with adults

Children’s everyday experiences of safety, trust and belonging are shaped by the adults, relationships and environments around them. Policies and safeguarding procedures are important, but they are most effective when people have the confidence and practical capability to put them into action.

Jade Speaks Up helps adults and organisations confidently recognise concerns, respond safely, and create cultures where tamariki and rangatahi are protected, included and supported to thrive. Our work is designed for everyday adults - not only safeguarding specialists - so they can act appropriately within their role and recognise when further or specialist support is needed.

Flexible, self-paced learning that participants can complete anytime, from anywhere. Our e-learning is designed to make practical knowledge accessible, easy to revisit and straightforward to apply in everyday practice.

Training shaped around your context

No two organisations have the same people, responsibilities or challenges. We work with you to understand the situations your team encounters, the capabilities you want to strengthen and the outcomes you want to achieve.

We can adapt existing learning or design bespoke training, resources and facilitated support around your organisation’s audience, sector and stage of development. This may include a single workshop, a series of learning sessions, leadership support or a broader organisational capability programme.

Training can focus on areas such as:

  • recognising and responding to safeguarding concerns

  • trauma-aware and neurodiversity-affirming practice

  • safe communication, disclosures and professional boundaries

  • de-escalation, regulation and co-regulation

  • bullying and relational harm

  • child voice, participation and belonging

  • inclusive practice and whānau engagement

  • leadership, organisational culture and safe systems

FAQs About Our Training and Support

Who is Jade Speaks Up training for?

Our professional learning is for adults who work with or have responsibility for tamariki and rangatahi. This includes teachers, school leaders, social workers, youth workers, council staff, coaches, volunteers, community practitioners and organisational leaders.

You do not need to be a safeguarding or child-development specialist. Our training is designed to help everyday adults build confidence and capability within their existing roles.

Is your training only for schools?

No. We work across education, sport and recreation, social and community services, care settings and other environments where adults support children and young people.

Training can be adapted to reflect the responsibilities, relationships and situations your people encounter.

What can you help our team with?

Our training and support can cover areas such as:

  • recognising signs of distress, harm or unsafe behaviour

  • responding safely to concerns and disclosures

  • understanding behaviour in the context of stress, trauma and neurodiversity

  • emotional regulation and co-regulation

  • de-escalation skills

  • safe communication and professional boundaries

  • bullying and relational harm

  • child voice, belonging and inclusion

  • whānau engagement

  • leadership, organisational culture and safe systems.

We will work with you to identify the areas most relevant to your people and setting.

What make Jade Speaks Up training different?

Our learning focuses on the everyday moments where policies must be put into practice. Participants explore realistic situations, practise useful responses and develop tools they can apply directly in their work.

Our approach is practical, strengths-based and grounded in violence prevention, emotional literacy, relational safety, neuroscience and te ao Māori perspectives.

What training formats are available?

Depending on the topic and the needs of your people, learning may be available through:

  • self-paced e-learning

  • interactive online webinar sessions

  • bespoke facilitated workshops

  • a series of learning sessions

  • tailored organisational training

  • leadership or implementation support

  • practical resources

Current formats, dates and costs are listed with each training offer or confirmed when you contact us.

Can training be tailored to our organisation?

Yes, absolutely. We can adapt existing learning or work with you to develop training around your organisation’s audience, responsibilities, challenges and goals.

This may involve examples from your sector, alignment with your existing policies and referral pathways, or a programme designed for different roles within your organisation.

Can individuals enrol, or is training only for teams?

Both options may be available. Individuals can access selected e-learning and scheduled professional-development opportunities, while organisations can arrange workshops or tailored training for a team.

Contact us if you are unsure which option is currently available or best suited to you.

Do we need previous experience or qualifications?

No specialist qualifications are required unless these are clearly stated for a particular course.

We meet participants at their current level of knowledge and focus on building practical confidence. People with established safeguarding experience can also benefit from strengthening shared language, relational practice and consistent responses across a team.

Will the training tell me what to do if a child discloses harm?

Our training can help you listen calmly, respond in a safe and supportive way, understand your professional boundaries and know when a concern needs to be passed on through the appropriate pathway.

Jade Speaks Up does not replace your organisation’s child-protection procedures, specialist safeguarding advice or statutory responsibilities. It helps people put those responsibilities into practice with greater clarity and confidence.

Is Jade Speaks Up a crisis or counselling service?

No. We are a violence-prevention and wellbeing organisation focused on building adult capability and creating safer cultures.

We do not provide emergency intervention, individual counselling or case management. Urgent concerns should always be managed through your organisation’s safeguarding procedures and the appropriate specialist or emergency services.

Is the learning relevant to culturally and neurologically diverse children?

Our approach recognises that tamariki and rangatahi communicate, regulate, participate and experience safety in different ways.

Training can include neurodiversity-affirming practice, accessibility, child voice, inclusive communication, te ao Māori perspectives and engagement with whānau. Tailored work allows us to explore the needs and strengths of the communities your organisation serves.

Will we receive resources after the training?

Resources vary between training offers but may include practical tools, reflection activities, downloadable materials, facilitator guidance or implementation resources.

For tailored organisational work, we can also discuss what follow-up support would help your team embed the learning consistently.

Can you work with our policies and existing safeguarding training?

Yes. Our work is intended to complement - not duplicate - specialist child-protection training, sector guidance and organisational policies.

We can help your people translate existing expectations into confident everyday practice and identify where roles, boundaries, referral pathways or procedures may need greater clarity.

How do we know which training is right for us?

Start by telling us who your people are, the situations they encounter and what you would like them to feel more confident doing.

We can then recommend an existing course, a facilitated workshop or a tailored approach that fits your context, priorities and stage of development.
